Early hip-hop, electro, R&B, and funk from the mid-80s, sourced around 1985 mainly from Philadelphia stations WDAS and Power 99. (The tape itself is covered in silver marker paint and not labeled with a number, but based on the case, music inlcuded, and type of tape used, it is assumed that this is number 8 in the series.)

Beach sounds recorded at Martin St beach in Kill Devil Hills, NC on Thursday May 20, 2021, starting at 8:11am. Recorded with a Samsung Galaxy S8 (didn't bring my portable Tascam). A couple of brief sections mid-recorded were faded out and back in to remove noise as I shifted my phone about. Audio normalized to -0.1dB. This is first tape in my collection that I attempted to do a tracklisting for. As you can see , I wrote the artist and song titles down on a napkin. I was working at a fast food joint at the time so I used what I had on hand. It was so cool that I was able to listen to my cassettes while I worked. I loved that part of the job. It’s interesting to me that I wrote the tracklist in cursive writing on a napkin and never transferred it to the j-card. I also taped over my Best of Tiffany mixtape....

(Date is an estimate based on the songs played. Not sure which side goes first - was recorded over a Madsounds promo tape labeled "Side O" and "Side X." Based on the talking, it sounds like Side O was from earlier in the evening.)

"Turn up the volume, set the dial to 95.8 and just rip the knob off" for 45 minutes of "downtown after hours soul selection." It’s actually just some random rap & RnB tracks from artists you’ll know, Craig G/Digital Underground, some ya might remember Today/Tashan (produced by Sam Sever, incidentally), and one or two I had never heard of until this tape, Mother’s Finest/Shabazz (with mixes produced by Eric "Vietnam" Sadler). Shouts to Justin Winks. Track...

Mike Allen's National Fresh  from December 1987. Some amusing airbreaks, including Chuck Chill's report where he accuses Run-DMC of "[making] mainstream chumps of themselves" on the Motown Merry Christmas special airing that evening. He asks, "When is Run-DMC going to get back to the real deal, which is rapping and being about the streets?" - Laze

In the UK for promo on his Shoot the Pump mix LP, the DJ that used to get shout-outs from Mr Magic and Kool DJ Red Alert, The White Whiz DJ Riz is the highlight of this show IMO. The Flip Squads’ finest justs destroys all manner of styles in this set that crosses all the era and genres of ill Hip-Hop and Rap. Crooklyn Clan member Riz is one of the tightest DJs ever and this set attests to that. A 17-year-old Aaliyah also appears on this rare full 3 hour show, available here remastered and...

For the record, French Hip-Hop culture goes back, there is a history that goes back way way further than MC Solaar. This is bloody obvious to French heads but not somethin fans outside of the country might be aware of. When I associate anything French and Hip-Hop I think of Z-3 MC’s, and the French National Anthem. I think of Melle Mels’ oh si raffine rhymes on It’s Nasty; ‘I tour around the world to make the people dance, and here’s a little message for the ladies in France. Je...

This show is a special best of 1994 edition of The Mastermind Street Jam that aired on the now defunct Energy 108, broadcasting out of Burlington, Ontario, Canada. I recorded this one a 120 minute cassette so I could get the whole show this time. Unfortunately, those longer tapes usually weren’t the best quality. As such, it has not aged well, and part of it is warbled and unlistenable. That’s why this episode is only an hour long. In the meantime, enjoy this trip down memory lane. - DJ...

This is a recording of Brother Adam & Gregory B playing Rare Groove on London pirate radio station Powerjam 92 from 1990. I think Brother Adam was actually a Jazz DJ but was just throwing on a few Rare Groove/Funk jams when I hit record! The completely nuts thing about this short recording is that there are 2 shout outs for a good friend of mine, Keith Lawrence who I didnt meet until about 20 years or so later on after this was recording was made. Here's an hour of Steve Jervier's The Pressure on London's Kiss FM from January '93. The Pressure  was primarily an R&B show (they did have a "Rap Attack" segment but it's not on this tape). The interesting discovery on this tape was the original version of Groove Theory's "Tell Me" by UK act Rhythm & Bass, which it seems not too many people know about. Both acts were on Sony and it seems like the song was written by GT's Amel Larrieux. Obviously their version with...

Mastermind Street Jam was a radio show on Energy 108 (107.9fm) that served the Hamilton, Burlington, and Toronto areas in the mid to late 1990s. This hip-hop mixshow was required listening. It was unique because it was on commercial radio Saturdays from 5:00 to 7:00 pm. It then moved to Monday and Tuesday nights from Midnight to 1:00 a.m. DJ Mastermind is still active on Toronto radio. - DJ Chase March
